Brown Howe quarry

Client: Cumbria GeoConservation

I collaborated with geologist and interpreter/illustrator Elizabeth Pickett on this panel for an old roadstone quarry in Cumbria. Elizabeth and I liaised with enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers from Cumbria GeoConservation to develop the panel content and design. We had some complicated geological concepts to convey, which had to mesh with the quarry history as well as information about current use. I find working closely with someone with specialist knowledge works well, as the layout and text obviously need to function together: diagrams and illustrations can often replace many lines of explanation. This process was particularly successful in this case, and the project was awarded the Geologists’ Association Curry Fund Award for Excellence.
